How Long Should a Veteran Resume Be?

The right length for a veteran resume depends on the job type: one page for most private-sector roles, two for senior roles, three to five for federal USAJOBS applications.

A veteran resume should be one page for entry-level and mid-career private-sector roles, two pages for senior or 10+ years of service, and three to five pages for federal USAJOBS applications.

Private sector rules of thumb

  • Under 10 years of service: 1 page.
  • 10+ years or executive: 2 pages.
  • Never exceed 2 pages for a private employer — recruiters spend an average of 7.4 seconds on each resume.

Federal / USAJOBS is different

Federal resumes require hours per week, supervisor names, salary history, and full duty statements. That structure produces 3–5+ page resumes by design. Trying to cram a federal application into one page will get you disqualified.

Common length mistakes

  • Copy-pasting your entire NCOER or OPR into bullets.
  • Listing every deployment as a separate role.
  • Repeating the same responsibilities across three assignments.

The fix

Keep only your last 10–15 years, group similar assignments, and lead each bullet with a strong verb + a number.
