Cover Letter Examples for Veterans (Private, Federal, Contracting)
Three real cover letter templates for veterans — one for a private employer, one for a federal USAJOBS application, and one for a defense contractor.
A veteran cover letter should do three things in under 300 words: name the job, prove you fit with one specific story, and ask for the interview.
Template 1: Private employer
Dear Hiring Team,
I'm applying for your Operations Manager role. Over 8 years in the U.S. Army I led teams of 12–40, managed $4M in equipment, and cut our reporting cycle time 40%. Those are the exact outcomes your posting asks for.
I'd welcome a 20-minute conversation this week.
Regards, John Smith
Template 2: Federal USAJOBS
Longer and mirrors the specialized experience statement. Reference the announcement number in the first line. Do not use military acronyms — HR specialists rarely know them.
Template 3: Defense contractor
Lead with the clearance level and your program experience. e.g. "Active TS/SCI. 5 years supporting SOCOM programs at Fort Bragg."
What to skip
- Generic openings ("I am writing to apply…").
- Restating the resume.
- Personal life details.
