Veteran Interview Questions: 15 You Will Be Asked and How to Answer
The 15 questions civilian interviewers ask veterans most often — including the awkward ones — with example answers that land offers.
Civilian interviewers ask veterans a mix of standard behavioral questions and a few they wouldn't ask anyone else.
The 15 questions
- "Tell me about yourself." — 60 seconds: current role, key wins, why this job.
- "Why are you leaving the military?" — Frame as growth, not escape.
- "How does your military experience apply here?" — Pick 2 stories that match the job description.
- "Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult situation." — STAR format, civilian language.
- "How do you handle conflict?" — Show de-escalation, not authority.
- "What's your biggest weakness?" — Pick a real one with a real fix.
- "Describe a failure." — Own it, then describe the lesson and the next outcome.
- "How do you take feedback from someone less experienced than you?" — They are screening for ego.
- "What's your management style?" — Coaching, not commanding.
- "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" — Tie it to the role and company.
- "What are your salary expectations?" — Give a researched range.
- "Do you have any combat-related issues we should know about?" — Illegal. Decline politely and pivot.
- "Why should we hire you over a candidate with industry experience?" — Lead with results.
- "How do you stay current in this field?" — Name 2 specific sources.
- "Do you have any questions for us?" — Always yes. Three minimum.
Sample STAR answer
Q: Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult situation.
A: In 2023 I led a 14-person maintenance team during a 90-day deployment with 30% staffing gaps. We had to keep 22 vehicles mission-capable with no surge support. I rebuilt the schedule around a 4-shift rotation, pulled in two cross-trained operators, and created a daily standup. We hit 96% mission-capable rate, up from 81% the prior rotation.
